英语段落中各语句都应在长度上有所改变，即所谓长长句子。用短句来表达概念，陈述事实，加强论述力度，有深度地强调；长句常用于描述、阐释、阐述整个情形，给人以严谨深刻的感觉。一般来说，长句有两种情况：一种是长句因结构复杂而形成，多见于书面语；另一种是为了使语句表达更生动、明晰，主要表现在口头表达上。
